Literacy Connects, the premier literacy organization in Southern Arizona, seeks an energetic and experienced Communications and Marketing Manager to join our outstanding team!  Now in our 10th year, we are proud to have received a 2021 Library of Congress Literacy Award as a Best Practice Honoree, the first Arizona-based organization to receive this recognition.  Our mission is to connect people of all ages to a world of opportunities through literacy and creative expression.  We serve more than 46,000 learners of all ages annually through five exemplary programs.  Literacy Connects thrives due to a student-centered, strengths-based approach that meets learners where they are and helps them reach their goals.  Led by a passionate and entrepreneurial Executive Director, Literacy Connects is poised to take on new challenges and achieve a bigger impact than ever.

The Communications and Marketing Manager works collaboratively with the Executive Director, Development Director, and staff to guide the strategy for all communications and public relations messaging to consistently articulate Literacy Connects’ mission and impact. The Communications and Marketing Manager effectively presents Literacy Connects’ case to donors and potential donors, creating effective strategies for different audiences and using appropriate communication channels to reach them, fostering Literacy Connects’ position as the premiere literacy organization in Tucson. The Communications and Marketing Manager works closely with all departments as the communications partner on a variety of strategic initiatives.



  • Create, manage, and execute Literacy Connects’ annual strategic marketing and communications plan; execute and assess communications strategies to create momentum and of Literacy Connects in the community; increase Literacy Connects’ footprint in media placements and social media.
  • Working with the Director of Development, oversee the c. Place stories about Literacy Connects in the media.
  • Responsible for maintaining social media presence, ensuring that new and consistent information (article links, photos, stories, and events) is posted regularly in alignment with the annual marketing/communications plan.
  • With Director of Development, create and implement a strategic communications and engagement plan for current and potential donors, community partners, volunteers, and key stakeholder groups to increase awareness of current gift and engagement opportunities.
  • Lead the creation of online content engaging audience segments and producing measurable responses.
  • Serve as primary contact for outside contract and volunteer design, marketing, and PR services.
  • Develop and maintain strong media relations and manage all media contacts.
  • Update donor thank you letter templates as needed.
  • Oversee Marketing Communications interns and contractors.
  • Serve as steward of the Literacy Connects brand.
  • Develop marketing and communications strategies for the programs.
  • Produce talking points and documents for the Executive Director and other Literacy Connects representatives.
  • Plan and prioritize organization-wide projects.
  • Manage advertising and underwriting.
  • Serve on internal committees, taskforces, and workgroups.
  • Stay informed on best practices in marketing/communications/public relations; follow all ethical standards and best practices in the field.


  • Bachelor’s degree and minimum five years professional experience in marketing, communications, public relations, or related field
  • Highly collaborative style; experience developing and implementing communications strategies; excellent writing, editing, proofreading, and verbal communication skills, including spelling, grammar and punctuation
  • Experience working with, or willingness to learn, the Donor Perfect database platform
  • Experience with the development and implementation of digital marketing strategy and social media best practices
  • A strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key projects concurrently
  • High energy, maturity, and leadership with the ability to serve as a facilitator to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels
  • Commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other supporters
  • Self-starter, entrepreneurial, and able to work independently with minimal supervision; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives
  • Experience working with committees, donors, and non-profit organizations


Hiring range is $45,000-$50,000 based on qualifications and experience
